HAITI
Tenant Rep Agency directly supports Hopital Sacre Coeur the
only hospital in the north east region of Haiti, the poorest country in the
Western Hemisphere, and one of the poorest nations in the world. Hopital Sacre Coeur is located in the village of Milot and has 64 beds, a pediatric wing,
specialty outpatient clinics, maternity services, and a modern laboratory.
Example, $25.00 can provide 50 meals feeding 5 children for
a week.
Per-capita annual income is $330. Life expectancy for women
is 54, for men 51. Fourteen of every 100 children die before the age of two.
The majority of children under five are malnourished. Forty-five percent have
never attended school.
For the 12 months ending December 31, 2006, Hopital Sacre Coeur served
55,694 people on an out-patient basis. It had 4,270 hospital admissions and
1,526 newborn deliveries, performed 1,190 surgeries, filled 159,765
prescriptions, completed 72,045 laboratory tests, and performed 3,986 other
diagnostic tests (EKG, Radiology, Endoscopy). In addition, it served on average
40 children per day in its Nutrition Center program.
A Mobile Clinic project was initiated in 2003 to better serve the needs of
the 225,000 people living within a 12 mile radius in smaller hamlets and rural
communities.
The Nutrition Center provides two free meals daily to malnourished preschool
children. CRUDEM also supports the primary school education of 1,000 children
in four Catholic schools in the Milot region.
